donald trump lost the only re-election campaign he ever has been in. that is our broadcast for this wednesday night. thanks for being with us on behalf of all of my colleagues at the networks of nbc news, good night. >> we start tonight on the republican side of politics and politics in the news where things are a little bit of a three-ring circus right now and it is starting to seem like the circus tent could come down in the wind. starting in georgia tonight, the national bull's eye and the focus of so much anger and upset and controversy over republicans rolling out new restrictions on voting rights, today in a surprise georgia's republican lieutenant governor admitted that the impetus for these
9:01 pm
draconian voting restrictions was the set of lies that was told by president trump and on behalf of president trump after he lost georgia in the election in 2020. this is what all of the critics have been claiming. georgia republicans are admitting this is true. >> this is really the fall out from the ten weeks of misinformation that flew in for former president donald trump. when noah juulsen showed up spending hours spreading misinformation the republican
9:02 pm
lieutenant governor of georgia admitting that republicans in georgia passed into law all of the voting restrictions in the state because of the lies spread by president trump and rudy giuliani. if georgia republicans are admitting that is the impetus for what they have done for rolling back voting rights in their state, perhaps corporations and entities like major league baseball could be forgiving for levying that criticism, that the whole thing is based on a lie now that the georgia republican party admits that it is based on a lie. the state prosecutor in fulton county, georgia announced that park cannon will not face felony charges for knocking on the door of the georgia governor's office while he was holding a private signing statement for the voting restrictions bill. we all saw that astonishing
9:03 pm
footage being handcuffed and dragged through the capitol by state troopers for knocking on the door of the room where the governor was holding the signing ceremony on the voting bill. optics were on the nose there. but she was taken to jail that night. we played footage of it on the show. she was charged with two felony counts and looking at years in prison if convicted. after a thorough investigation representative cannon will not
9:04 pm
be charged. after reviewing the evident i have decided to close the matter. while some of her colleagues and the police officers involved might have found her behavior annoying, such sentiment does not justify a presentment to a grand jury of the allegations in the arrest warrants or any other felony charges. so the georgia voting rights restriction law is still law and the biggest employers in georgia are professing to be repulsed by what republicans have done with the law. major league baseball will not hold their all-star game or draft in georgia because of that law. the city of atlanta is trying to figure out how to avoid enforcing the law in metro atlanta. at least the one atlanta-based state represent, at least she will not be going to jail for years because of the law,
9:05 pm
knocking on the governor's door to see it getting signed. keep knocking. keep knocking on the door. republican politics went through a remarkable gyration today when it comes to what you think is a sensitive issue about the party's comfort level with defrauding supporters and stealing from them. the trump campaign and the republican party took in tens of
9:06 pm
millions that their donors did not intend to give them. 78-year-old california man that made a donation and the trump campaign took the same amount, another $999, seven more times from him without him knowing and took nearly $8,000 from him when he tried to donate less than 1,000. he told the times, bandits. i am retired. i can't afford to pay all of that damn money. there was an 87-year-old in illinois who made a series of small contributions to trump last fall that he thought would add up to $200. by december the trump organization had actually withdrawn more than 70 donations from the man's bank account
9:07 pm
totaling roughly $2,300. that man told the times it was predatory. a bunch of anecdotes like this. beyond the evidence, there was the shocking cumulative data. trump's campaign and the republican fundraising operation that he ran around the election had to refund more than $120 million that they snookered their own donors out of. that is just from the people that caught it and complained. the people that did not know they got fleeced or did and didn't know how to get the money back. a shocking story. damaging for the republican party. who you do you ask people to ever trust you enough again. to donate money to you once you have ripped off thousands of people like that. apparently with no repentance whatsoever. the times in the reporting
9:08 pm
documented the little yellow check boxes that the republicans used of their fundraising pitches to rope people into giving more money than they intended. let's break a fundraising record on president trump's birthday. and then below in lighter print this additional donation will process on june 14th. the box is pre-checked as does the monthly recurring donation box above it. that bottom one, even though it does not say it in plain language, if you do not uncheck the box, they are going to double the amount of money that they take from you. whatever the donation was they are going to take it a second time on that date in the fine print. unless you uncheck that box. if you your great aunt thought she was giving $200. unless she read to the bottom and figure out what the checked boxes meant and manually
9:09 pm
unchecked them she was go to give $200 a month, maybe and an extra $200 randomly taking on june 14th. she had to notice, understand and go out of her way to uncheck them in order for that not to happen. join the president's executive club for true patriots only. didn't consider yourself to be a true patriot unless you found all of those things and unchecked the box, $200 would be $200 every week all the way through november until you figured out they were ripping you off and cancelled your credit card. just a humiliating scam the republican party and trump operation got caught for this past weekend in the "new york times." now we know how they reacted.
9:10 pm
nrcc, supporting republicans in the house of representatives. they put this out today pre-checked if per their donors. we need to know we have not lost you to the radical left. if you uncheck this box, you will be told you are a defector and sided with the demes. in lighter text below. make it a monthly recurring donation. this is what the national republican party is doing today tos it marks, i means it donors. if you are a defector and want to be reported as such to our former president who is ruthless and relentless against defectors
9:11 pm
and ruins peoples' lives, sicks his followers on them. have you seen the way he goes after people that are not loyal to him. if you are one of them uncheck this box you traitor. unchecking the box is the only way you can keep them from taking your intended one-time donation over and over until your bank account is drained. there is this one today from the republican party. if you want trump to run for president in 2024. check this box. if approximate we flip five seats and the house read trump said he will run. that is not true. uncheck the box. we lose. what does unchecking the box do? you have to skip down and look at the finer print. so they don't keep taking more money from you in the future. they don't double your donation.
9:12 pm
this was exposed this week as driven more than $100 million in fraud claims by republican trump supporters. they are not only still doing it but going hog wilded with it. they are upping the predatory nature and the bamboozling nature of the things to trick as many people as they can to falling for the schemes and their bank account is left open to the republican party to keep coming back and taking money out of it without getting further permission. becoming a donor in this era is like replying to one of the nigerian prince e-mails with your bank account organization. loning your debit card to the local meth dealer for just a few hours. he said he would give it back. the latest news on the republican side of things is a little bit like a three-ring circus with the tent falling down. the saddest ring is the on going
9:13 pm
and still expanding scandal around the most visible and enthusiastic pro-trump congressmen of them all, former florida congressman, matt gaetz. it developed into a way that does not look good for matt gaetz. we have one of the reporters that broke that story in a couple of minutes to break it down for us. but the republican side of things today was helter-skelter. democratic side of things was a super charged day and it marked what may be a new tone maybe a new tenor from president biden and the democrats. there is reason for them to be making a pivot right now because of something structural that changed in politics this week. this week the democrats learned they will be allowed, if they
9:14 pm
want to use the senate rules in such a way to pass legislation in the senate with just a simple majority of votes. that is a really, really big deal and thought they could do it one more time this year. turns out they can do it when they want to. that is a huge deal. if the democrats had to hit a 60-vote margin in the senate to pass anything, which is what is true with the filibuster rule in place. if they had to hit the 60-vote threshold we could expect nothing else on the biden administration's agenda to pass in to law. republicans said and shown they will not allow any republican senators to cast any votes with democrats on anything of
9:15 pm
substance. not a single republican senator voted for it. republican leader mitch mcconnell says not a single republican senator will vote for the infrastructure bill no matter what is in it and like with the covid relief bill, not because it is an unpopular measure. new polling shows broad majority support for every single major element of the infrastructure bill. from modernizing v.a. hospitals, improving care giving facilities. replacing all of the lead pipes in the water system, building and improving public schools, high speed broadband, public transit and am track, airports, electric vehicle fleets and chargers and capping and cleaning up abandoned wells and mines. they pulled on all of those elements of it separately and every one of those has at least
9:16 pm
50 support among registered voters. most considerably more than 50%. nothing has less than a majority of the country supporting it. look at that one highlighted proposal that we have got there in yellow. that is just the proposal about improving care giving facilities for older and disabled americans. that is the part of the biden infrastructure bill that republicans keep picking on in particular and the part they really hate and if they keep talking about that, it will turn the public against the infrastructure bill. that has got 76% support among american registered voters. 86% among democrats. 64% among republican voters. overall, only 13% of the country says they are in opposition to that and the rest don't know. that thing with 76% overall support and 64% among republican voters. that is the thing republicans
9:17 pm
chose to pick on the most. if they keep talking about that, oh, boy. they will win on this one. that is wildly popular. that is more popular than kittens. but still they say not a single republican senator will vote for the bill and even from the outset, even before they formally debate it. zero republicans. well, that is your pe rogtive, okay. for some this popular. for you all to stand against it when it is going to pass anyways. feel free. democrats have an option to pass it without republican votes and president biden added he would love for republicans to support the bill and thinks they should but if they don't they don't. it is going ahead anyways. >> debate is welcome. compromise is inevitable. changes are certain. the vice president and i will be meeting with republicans and democrats to hear from everyone
9:18 pm
and we will be listening. we will be open to good ideas and good faith negotiationings. here is what we won't be open to. we will not be open to doing nothing. inaction simply is not an option. since i announced the plan i heard from my republican friends, many say it is too big. they say why not focus on traditional infrastructure. fix what we have already got, the roads and highways and the bridges. i am happy to have that debate. but i want to tell you my view. we are america. we don't just fix for today. we build for tomorrow. 200 years ago trains were not traditional infrastructure until america made a choice to lay
9:19 pm
down tracks across the country. highways were not traditional infrastructure until we allowed ourselves to imagine that roads could connect our nations across straight lines. the idea of infrastructure always has evolved to meet the aspirations of the american people and their needs. we need to see infrastructure throughs it effect on the lives of working people in america. what is the foundation today that they need to carve out their place in the middle class to make it. to live, go to work and raise their families with dignity. to make sure good jobs are there for their kids no matter who they are or what zip code they live in. that is what infrastructure means in the 21st century. roads and bridges, ports and
9:20 pm
airports, rail and mass transit. reliable high speed internet in every home. today's high speed internet is infrastructure. it depends on the electric grid. a grid that won't collapse in a winter storm and compromised by hackers. ask your teacher or a child care worker if having clean drinking water, non-contaminated drinking water in our schools and child care centers is part of that foundation. >> president biden today speaking on infrastructure with republicans standing uniformly against the infrastructure bill. the republican senator promising there will be no republican votes if are it. democrats will have to pass it using the same process they used for the covid relief bill, a senate rule letting them pass it
9:21 pm
with 50 votes instead of 60. they can use that as many times as they want this year. it still hasn't really caught on broadly in the way that people are talking about politics but this will be a defining thing about the biden presidency and the first two years he is in office. the filibuster rule changed a few times. they keep narrowing down what the filibuster applies to. what you can exempt from the 60-vote threshold. this new ruling means you can't apply the 60-vote threshold to budget bills. bills that affect government taxes and spending.
9:22 pm
the way that it has been described, that seems to be what it means. and that will change what is possible. in a big way with 50 democratic senators and a democrat in the white house. and so, this 50-vote rule is how they will pass infrastructure in the end. mark my words. in addition to that what else are they going to pass using the rule. what else are they going to pass via the rules that do not require them to get ten republicans to cross a mythical line and side with democrats which they won't do on anything. house speaker nancy pelosi is working on a way to pass immigration reform under the same rules. you probably can't pass everything in immigration reform but you can do a lot. if democrats can agree on what to do and comes up with a list fitting within the budget rules, they will be able to pass
9:23 pm
immigration reform this year with uniformed republican opposition and zero republican votes. and there are limits. not everything can fit under the budget rules allowing for the 50-vote rule. in addition nobody believes that voting rights can pass as well. they are probably not good options for passing gun safety reforms. but they are going to do everything they can every way that they can. and tonight we are learning that at least on guns president biden will take executive action to get things done even when the filibuster rule means they can expect it through congress. president biden is due at 11:45 eastern time in the rose guard tone announce a series of executive actions on kbun.

9:25 pm
agency and run the atf is something republicans confirm to be a terrible thing. there hasn't been a director at all since 2015. president biden is saying that well, this year there will be. yes. republicans will hate that. i am sure none will vote for him but it will happen anyway. the nra will hate it too, frankly. but they are tied up in a bankruptcy trial which does not appear to be going their way. wayne lapierre testifying about all of the multiple times that he spent taking free vacations on a multimillion dollar yacht. it really seems like wayne lapierre was taking very,

right now. frankly the republicans are going to vote no on everything president biden votes for. no matter how much they like it, they will vote no. defrauding. they are worried about what they will do if one of the highest profile congressmen gets charged with child sex trafficking. they are trying to keep entertaining donald trump's fantasy that he is still secretly president from his golf club because the last election didn't count. if we call him the 45th president he doesn't believe he is an ex-president. that is what is going on in republican party politics right now. i know we are a two major party system in terms of the political system. one of the things is not like the other. one of the parties is not like
